McDonald's Fast Food Weddings - Will It Work?

In Hong Kong, McDonald's is offering local customers an opportunity to get married inside the fast food restaurant. Apparently, people there love McDonald's that much!

While many people in America think the concept is cheesy, many in China are loving the idea - especially since it only costs about $400 US dollars to host a wedding ceremony and a reception for up to 100 guests. Local couples are saying that they met each other at McDonald's, went there for dates, and so why not get married there?

While several fast food chains have held individual weddings abroad and in the U.S., including Burger King and Taco Bell, McDonald's chains in Hong Kong are the first to actively promote such wedding services.

The bad news? The McWeddings must be alcohol-free. And, the restaurant will not be exclusive to the wedding party. During the ceremony, business will go on as usual for other customers.

Despite this, I think it's a great idea to sell anything that people will buy into. If people in China love the concept, then by all means - sell it. Not only will it generate extra revenue, but it'll generate a lot of priceless publicity.

I also think this proves that they are many unique business opportunities in other countries to pursue. A concept that won't work in the U.S. can easily work overseas, and can be very profitable. If the bigger American corporations are doing it, then the smaller businesses should follow suit.

Smart companies realize that the U.S. market only represents 5% of all consumers around the world. The other 95% are in other countries, and may be a lot more open-minded to certain ideas.

  1. I love the idea. In a world of microwave mentality this venture fits the bill. Yes it may be cheesy but the overall idea is no different then that of a drive-thru Vegas wedding. When a young couple tells me they want to have an elaborate wedding that will cost thousands of dollars I ask why. I tell them to try an inexpensive wedding and live. Why go into a marriage riddled with debt? Go Mickey D’s!
