Video Game Makes $360 Million In One Day

How bad is the economy when a video game can generate $360 million in sales in just one day? That may sound far-fetched, but it literally just happened when Activision released their highly anticipated "Call of Duty: Black Ops" game for the Xbox, Wii, Playstation, and PC.

According to the company, they sold 5.6 million copies of the game in just one day. By doing this, they broke last year's record of selling 4.7 million copies of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" in one day - which generated $310 million in sales. They easily hold the title of having the two "biggest entertainment launches in history".

I would never endorse this game franchise because of it's graphic violence, but such an accomplishment proves that even during a bad economy, a company (small or large) can still create products that people will overwhelmingly respond to. It also proves that maybe the economy isn't as bad as we think it is.

Activision is one of many companies that continue to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue, despite the "recession" that we are in. Consider Wal-Mart, Southwest Airlines, Amazon.com, Google, and Virgin America - all who have posted record profits in the past year or two. Amongst such companies are also many small businesses that continue to grow as they generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual revenue.

The truth is that a bad economy in America is really not that bad. Yes, the national unemployment rate is 9.6%, but do you realize that this means that more than 90% of Americans are still employed by a company (or non-profit organization or government agency) that is obviously still making money.

As an entrepreneur, do not allow the media to convince you that the economy is worse than it really is. Now is a great time to start a new business and/or expand an existing business. Many companies are generating significant revenue streams, and there's no reason for you to think that you can't either.

  1. Great post Dante, you hit the nail on the head. It is a true fact that the economy is bad but more so than anything; it is also a true fact that people love self-pleasure. This is one of the leading problems in the urban community. I was reading an article that urban America spends well over 300 million on clothing alone. This is indeed a problem that doesn’t seem to be getting any better.
I find it funny because in my business I see it all the time. I see people who will not invest in their future but will struggle to drive a 50K, 60K or maybe even a 100K vehicle.
As for the game, I am guilty, although I haven’t purchased it yet (I will be doing so soon). I am guilty of helping them become as big as they are. I am a Call Of Duty Fanatic. I have all of the previous games and have gifted them to friends. What can I say?
